An episiotomy is a cut from the vagina to the perineum (towards one of the thighs) that widens the vaginal opening and allows a greater space for the baby’s head to crown at birth. It’s highly likely that in an instrumental birth (forceps or vacuum), the obstetrician will request your consent for an episiotomy. It’s important to note that an episiotomy can’t be performed without your consent.
