A New Senate Committee Could Change Postpartum Care in Australia

This Women's Health Week, there's something genuinely worth celebrating: the Senate has agreed to establish a new Select Committee on Women's Health, and submissions are now open.

What is it?

A Senate select committee is established through a vote in parliament and given resources for a set period, in this case about a year, to gather evidence, hold public hearings across Australia, and make recommendations to government. It doesn’t have the power to make funding decisions directly, but it plays a critical role in surfacing real experiences, building an evidence base, and sparking national conversation. Past inquiries like this have led to real change, including an $800 million women’s health package that followed the Menopause and Perimenopause inquiry.

This committee is chaired by Senator Marielle Smith and works across party lines, with members from Labor, the opposition and the Greens all collaborating on the final report.

What will it look into?

The committee’s focus areas include:

  • Postpartum care and support for mothers and partners, including after infant loss
  • The physical, psychological and economic impact of birth
  • Access and affordability of postpartum healthcare, mental health support and pelvic health physiotherapy
  • Women’s pain, including experiences of medical misogyny
  • Access and affordability of fertility and assisted reproduction treatments

Who should submit?

Everyone. Whether your experience was last week or ten years ago, whether it was overwhelmingly positive or genuinely difficult, it counts. You don’t need to be a clinician or an expert. A few honest paragraphs about your own experience is just as valuable as a detailed report. You can submit anonymously if you’d rather keep your name private.

When do submissions close?

Submissions close 9th October, with the committee’s final report due in August next year.

This is a rare chance to help shape real policy change in postpartum care, women’s pain and fertility support in Australia. If any of this resonates with you, please consider sharing your story.
